The Black River

The Black River starts at North Lake (Atwell NY) and flows south west to the Forestport Dam (Kayuta Lake) before it turns north for it’s almost 100 mile journey to Watertown and Lake Ontario. Along the way you can find recreational rafting, kayak and canoe paddling. Great fishing. Near Watertown you'll find lake sturgeon, walleye and salmon.  Great Fly Fishing in the faster waters from North Lake to Lyons Falls where it joins up with the Moose River.

From Lyons Falls to the Carthage dam are 44 miles of uninterrupted flat water winding gracefully between the Adirondacks and the Tug Hill Plateau. There are a variety of access points and services along the way.

From Forestport to Boonville is the Black River Canal. The towpath is available for biking, running and cross-country skiing.

There are also gorges and rocky segments making the river extremely picturesque and a haven for photographers.
